Merchant Surcharge
Merchant Surcharge Program is a pricing structure that enables merchants to add a percentage fee to the total transaction price when a customer chooses to pay with a credit card instead of another for of payment such as cash, check, or debit card. This particular pricing program can help reduce merchant’s processing fee by up to 75%. With industry compliant signage, customers are aware of the surcharge percentage and can choose their preferred for of payment. Effective as of April 15, 2023, Visa set the maximum surcharge cap to 3%. The rate that merchants pay for debit transactions are 1.25% and $0.25 per transactions. As a result, when surcharging across all card brands, the three percent is inherently applicable to all credit card transactions regardless of the card brand.
